Webinar on Movable Asset Finance for MSMEs in Nepal

On December 9, Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) in collaboration with International Finance Corporation (IFC), jointly organized a webinar on “Movable Asset Finance for MSBEs in Nepal”.

The program started with an opening remarks from Mr. Anil Kumar Upadhyay, President, NBA and Mr. Babacar S. Faye, Resident Representative, IFC.

In the opening remarks, Mr. Upadhyay highlighted upon the importance of MSMEs and the role it can play in the economy. He highlighted some of the possible positive aspects of movable asset financing and the possibility of NBA to coordinate with IFC for the betterment of the industry and to align it with international standards. He also shared the importance of SME is also felt by the regulators and provisions are already incorporated in the policy for mandatory lending. He thanked IFC for the collaboration on Movable Asset Finance for MSMEs webinar.

Mr. Faye also shared how the MSMEs are more reliant on their assets and equipment as their collateral and the need of financial sector to support them as they have an important role to play in the advancement of economy. He welcomed the ongoing collaboration between two organizations and expected to have many more in the days ahead.

During the program, Mr. Jinchang Lai, Principal Operations Officer, FIG Advisory, Asia and Pacific, IFC shared a presentation on “Why banks need to develop movable asset lending?”.

The program was valued added by a discussion session attended by EC Member and CEO Sunrise Bank Ltd Mr. Suman Sharma, Mr. Lin Huang, Senior Operations Officer, FIG Advisory, Asia and Pacific, IFC and Mr. Rajendra Luitel, Operations Officer, FIG Advisory, Asia and Pacific, IFC. Mr. Sharma shared how the banking industry is still more comfortable on traditional collateral-based lending and the reasons behind why banks are hesitant to project financing. He also shared on change which has been observed on recent times and how the project based financing is gathering pace and banks are supporting them. The session provided essential knowledge and insights into various aspects that Banks need to develop movable asset lending with their benefits to both banks and MSMEs in Nepal.

There was a participation of Head of Credit, Head of SME/Microfinance Banking, Head of Risk Department, among others from the member banks.

Webinar on ESMS & H&S management system

November 26, 2021

On 25 & 26 November, Nepal Bankers’ Association in collaboration with FMO, organized a webinar to discuss the effective implementation of a Health and Safety (H&S) management system, as a sub-set within the larger environment and social management system (ESMS).

These sessions were an ongoing engagement under the Steward Leadership Series aiming to start the conversation towards a constructive ESG approach.

The sessions were presented by ERM India aiming to enhance the efficiency for practitioners of H&S and for companies that wish to implement and/or strengthen their H&S policies and practices.

There was a participation of CROs, CCOs, and other officials from member banks in the session.

Webinar on Secured Transaction Act

November 23, 2021

On November 23, in coordination with IFC, Nepal Bankers’ Association organized a webinar on “Draft Amendment of Secured Transaction Act”.

The session provided essential knowledge into movable assets-based finance ecosystem, lenders concerns strengthening borrower protections, modern secured transaction lending and international practices, simplify registration rules and priority rules. The discussion also deliberated upon the amendment proposed in the STR Act.

There was a participation of Legal Heads and Credit Heads from member banks in the session.

Webinar on Credit Reporting in Nepal

November 22, 2021

Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) in coordination with the International Finance Cooperation (IFC) organized a webinar on “Credit Reporting in Nepal” where Head of Corporate Banking, SME/Microfinance Banking, Retail Banking and Risk Department of Commercial banks were invited.

NBA President Mr. Anil Kumar Upadhyay, started the session by welcoming all participants with his opening remarks. He thanked the colleagues of NBA and IFC for staring a wonderful collaboration to strengthening the Nepalese Banking Sector. He also mentioned this coordination should be continued to reform the other areas of Banking sectors. He further highlighted the importance of robust Credit Reporting System and requested all to take optimum benefit from this session.

Likewise, Mr. Babacar S. Faye, Resident Representative, IFC also addressed the session and appreciated this joint effort and thanked all the participants for their presence. He added that more areas of collaboration with the stakeholders like NBA could be explored where both parties can work together for the betterment of the banking fraternity.

After the presentation, there was a Panel Discussion where the panelists were Ms. Lin Huang, Senior Operations Officer, FIG Advisory, Asia and Pacific, IFC and Mr. Ajaya Bikram Shah, NBA Executive Committee Member and Chief Executive Officer, Laxmi Bank Ltd. shared their thoughts on the subject matter.

Followed by the question and answer session with the participants, the session ended with closing remarks from Mr. Santosh Pandey, Country Officer, IFC.

On November 22, Nepal Bankers’ Association in collaboration with IFC, jointly organized a webinar on “Credit Reporting in Nepal”.

The program was started with opening remarks from Mr. Anil Kumar Upadhyay, President, Nepal Bankers’ Association and Mr. Babacar S. Faye, Resident Representative, International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group.

In the opening remark, NBA President mentioned upon various areas where NBA could work together with IFC for the betterment of the banking industry and align it with international standards. He also thanked IFC for today’s collaboration on Credit reporting webinar.

35th Annual Function of Nepal Bankers’ Association

November 9, 2021

09 November, 2021, Nepal Bankers’ Association held its 35th Annual Function today. During the AGM function, Governor, Deputy Governor and Senior Officials of Nepal Rastra Bank, Ministry of Finance, Chairperson, CEOs, Deputy CEOs and Officials from Member Banks along with representatives from various institutions were invited.

The Immediate Past President Mr. Bhuvan Dahal heartily welcomed all the guests and highlighted some key economic and banking indicators and also touched upon the role played by the banks to support the businesses and economic activities during the period of COVID 19. He also shared the progress made by Nepalese Banking fraternity in Financial Inclusion and Digital Banking. He also thanked Honorable Governor for proposing the amendment in the Banking Offence and Punishment Act through Monetary Policy.

During the program, a music video produced by NBA to support the Let’s Open Bank Account Campaign was also released by the  Honorable Governor. The lyricist of this music video was former Deputy Governor Mr. Chinta Mani Siwakoti.

Giving continuation to NBA’s tradition of felicitating current/past Chairperson during its Annual Function who has significantly contributed towards the development and growth of financial/banking sector, this year the Association decided to felicitate Dr. Shankar Prasad Sharma, Former Chairman of Citizens Bank International Ltd.

Dr. Sharma had served as a Vice-Chairman of National Planning Commission, Member of Board  Director of Nepal Rastra Bank, Ambassador to the United States of America and Chairman of Citizens Bank International Ltd.  He also contributed in the Financial Sector Stability/ Reform through his engagement in different capacity at Ministry of Finance and various international organizations.

During the function, the Chief guest of the Program Honorable Governor Mr. Maha Prasad Adhikari, NBA President Mr. Anil Kumar Upadhyay and Immediate Past President Mr. Bhuvan Dahal jointly presented Dr. Sharma with a momento in recognition of his significant contribution in the banking and financial sector of Nepal.

Speaking after the felicitation, Dr. Sharma shared his experiences of financial sector reforms. He further stated that reform is a never ending process and banking sector is very sensitive sector of an economy that may have immediate effect in the overall performance of the economy.

Chief Guest Honorable Governor addressed the event and shared the progress made by banks in the financial inclusion and digital banking. He stated that banks should be cautious in lending activities and support towards economic growth. He also requested banks to perform considering the long term goals rather than short term goals.

The newly elected President Mr. Anil Kumar Upadhaya thanked all guests for their presence at the function. He shared his vision to improve banking sector and take it to the new heights. He emphasized the role of banking sector in the economic growth and development in the days ahead as well.  He requested all the members and stakeholders for their continious cooperation and coordination.

 

Steward Leadership Session

6 October 2021, Under the Steward Leadership Series, NBA and FMO jointly organized a webinar to discuss the implementation of the Environment and Social Management System (ESMS). This was a follow-up session from the earlier session with the CEOs.
This session was arranged with a specific target towards the Chief Risk Offers of the member banks with an aim to help them delve deeper into templates and check-lists that will help them implement guidelines for specific sectors such as renewables, construction, retail, mining etc. They will have a more hands-on learning approach.

Steward Leadership Session

4 October 2021, As third engagement under the Steward Leadership Series, NBA and FMO jointly organized a webinar to discuss the implementation of the environment and social management system (ESMS).

This was an introductory session on ESMS focusing on how it can streamline compliance and implementation of company objectives throughout the organization.

Risk Management – Demystifying Advanced Approach to Risk Management

On 29th September 2021, in coordination with the Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Ltd, Nepal Bankers’ Association arranged a session on Risk Management. During the session, Mr. Vincent Loh, Chief Risk Officer, Singapore & Cluster Chief Risk Officer ASEAN Markets, SCB made a presentation on “Demystifying Advanced Approach to Risk Management”.

 

The session provided essential knowledge and insights into the Risk Management Modalities with Risk Culture, Defense Model, Risk Strategy, Risk Appetite, Risk Governance, and Principal Risk.

Steward Leadership Session

On Thursday 9 September 2021, Nepal Bankers Association and FMO jointly organized the “Steward Leadership Session” aiming to start the conversation towards a constructive Environmental & Social Guidelines (ESG) approach. The session was intended for the Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of member banks.

The session provided essential knowledge & insights into the current thinking on climate change risk and opportunities and explained how to embed climate change considerations into Corporate Governance.

Tree Plantation Event at Surkhet

September 4, 2021

Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) Karnali Province Committee organized a ‘Tree Plantation Program” on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Lake Bulbule premise, Birendranagar Surkhet. This program was conducted with the intention of promoting greenery, a clean environment as well as the aesthetically pleasing landscape in the town of Birendranagar thereby substantiating internal tourism in Surkhet and Karnali Province as a whole. The Tree Plantation Program was attended by Mayor of Birendranagar Municipality Mr. Dev Kumar Subedi and Chief District Officer of Surkhet Mr. Chhabi Lal Rijal as special guests.

Both dignitaries expressed appreciation and congratulated the banking sector for this good initiative and assured support from their respective field in such social programs in days ahead.

The Committee Coordinator Mr. Ram Kumar Thapa expressed his gratitude to the Mayor and the Chairman of Surkhet Valley Town Development Committee Chairperson Mr. Subedi and the Chief District Officer Mr. Rijal for their motivation and support for this initiative. He also thanked all concerned for their support and time to make the event a success. Other participants were Nepal Rastra Bank and Nepal Police along with Province Heads or their representatives of various Commercial Banks in Birendranagar, Surkhet.

Altogether 55 plants of various trees including Kalki, Jacaranda, Gulmohar, and Sami were planted on the occasion

Consultation Meeting on Family-Friendly Policy/Practices in Banking Sector

Nepal Bankers’ Association & UNICEF Nepal jointly organized Consultation Meeting on Family-Friendly Policy/Practices in Banking Sector on 25 August 2021. The meeting discussed the necessity of Work & Family Life Balance accompanying three major resources; time, finances & services that shall have a positive impact on children’s development & wellbeing.

Besides, the meeting also discussed the existing practices, gaps & challenges within it in Nepal and addressed the family-friendly workplace policies such as maternity/paternity leave, health insurance, sound mental health, etc that shall contribute to Work & Family Life Balance sooner or later.

There was participation from most of the member banks.

Webinar on Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP)

Nepal Bankers’ Association & RIMS jointly conducted a webinar program on Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP) Implementation on 19th August, 2021.

The webinar discussed on management of the risk profile and capital requirements of bank in today’s risk environment along with internal procedures and processes required to ensure adequate capital resources in the long term to cover various risks.

The speakers of the program were Ms. Geethy Panicker, Senior Vice President Risk, HSBC Singapore and Mr. Viral Shethia, Head Asset Liabilities and Capital Management, HSBC. There was participation from Chief Risk Officers, Chief Finance Officers, among others.

Financial Literacy at Karnali Province

March 22, 2021, Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) Karnali Province Committee, supported by NBA, Kathmandu organized 1-day Banking Awareness/Financial Literacy Program amongst local entrepreneurs and banking customers of Birendra Nagar Municipality, Karnali Province, at Birendranagar, Surkhet. This program was designed with special focus on Digital Banking, Basics of Credit and Tax regulation. Further, information regarding subsidized agricultural loans as well as products /policies for Covid-19 affected businesses were also shared during the program.

The program was chaired by Mr. Raj Kumar Shakya, Coordinator, Nepal Bankers Association, Karnali Province in presence of Chief Guest Mr Shaligram Pokhrel (Chief of NRB, Karnali Provincial office, Surkhet and Guest Mr. Dhan Bd Rawat (President of FNCCI, Surkhet). 

The program was attended by selected group of around 95 customers of all commercial banks in Birendranagar, Surkhet. The attendant customers were very satisfied by the program and requested to continue this type of awareness programs frequently for developing their banking habit.

The Members wished for their successful tenure and shared that the banking industry is looking forward to work together under their guidance to further enhance and strengthen the banking industry.

MoU Between Nepal Bankers’ Association and FNCCI

February 25, 2021

25 February 2021, Nepal Bankers’ Association (NBA) and Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce & Industries (FNCCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) whereby the two organizations had the understanding to assist in promoting loans and banking services to the MSMEs. The MoU was signed by Mr. Bhuvan Dahal, President of NBA, and Mr Shekhar Golchha, President of FNCCI.

The initiative is expected to promote effective and smooth banking services in coordination with the provincial and central levels. Both the parties look forward to conducting financial literacy campaign and will also jointly provide suggestions to the concerned stakeholders on various policy reforms.

Felicitation by NBA

December 29, 2020, Kathmandu: Nepal Bankers’ Association held its 34th Annual General Meeting today.

The Chief Guest of the program Honorable Governor, Nepal Rastra Bank gave a keynote speech where he highlighted the financial situation of the country where a lot of economic indicators are on the positive side. He added that the private-sector lending which was not encouraging at the beginning of the current FY, has now shown good signs and we have witnessed credit growth in recent months. He also suggested channelizing the loans in the productive sector which is of national priority.

He further said that NRB has kept payment systems as a priority and directed banks to promote QR Code Payment System. He further added that QR-based payment will reduce the dependency on imported technology and cards. On merger and acquisition, he mentioned that NRB is ready to provide necessary support which would encourage banks to go for M&A.

Giving continuation to NBA’s tradition of felicitating one eminent person during the Annual Function, this year, the Association decided to felicitate former Governor and former Chairman of Nabil Bank Ltd – Mr. Satyendra Pyara Shrestha.

Mr. Shrestha is the former Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. He served as the 10th Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank from January 18, 1995 – January 17, 2000 A.D. He was also the Chairman of Nabil Bank Ltd. He also held various positions at the Ministry of Finance, International Monetary Fund, among others. He has played a major role by contributing towards the development of the banking industry and strengthening the financial sector of Nepal.

Speaking after the felicitation, Mr. Shrestha thanked NBA for the recognition and shared some of his insights and experiences. He also requested all the stakeholders to collaborate together to come out from this challenging situation.

Interaction session on “Environment & Social Risk Management”

January 13, Kathmandu: Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Ltd, in coordination with Nepal Bankers’ Association organized an interaction session on “Environment & Social Risk Management”. The session focused on the changing landscape of sustainability in international financing and how it may apply to the future projects developments in Nepal.  

Mr. Heath Gibson, Director within Standard Chartered’ s Sustainable Finance Division made a presentation highlighting the work conducted by the Bank in the area, and also shared some insights on the subject matter.

Honorable Governor Dr. Chiranjibi Nepal, along with Executive Director Mr. Dev Kumar Dhakal from Nepal Rastra Bank, and CEOs from member banks participated in the program.

नेपाल उद्योग परिसंघ र नेपाल बैंकर्स संघ बिच निजी लगानी प्रर्वद्धन मार्फत आर्थिक विकासमा सहकार्य गर्न समझदारीपत्रमा हस्ताक्षर गरेका छन् । परिसंघमा आयोजित कार्यक्रममा परिसंघका अध्यक्ष सतिश कुमार मोर र बैंकर्स संघका अध्यक्ष ज्ञानेन्द्र प्रसाद ढुंगानाले समझदारी पत्रमा हस्ताक्षर गर्नु भएको हो ।
हस्ताक्षर समारोहमा परिसंघका अध्यक्ष सतिश कुमार मोरले समग्र लगानीको वातावरण बनाउन उद्योगी तथा बैंकहरु एक अर्काका परिपूरक भएकाले यो समझदारी महत्वपूर्ण रहको बताउनु भयो । बैंकर्स संघका अध्यक्ष ज्ञानेन्द्र प्रसाद ढुंगानाले बैंकिङ्ग क्षेत्रमा आएका नयाँ नयाँ व्यवस्थालाई लगानीमैत्री बनाउन आपसी सहकार्यले अर्थ राख्ने बताउनु भयो ।
समझादारी अनुसार, उद्योग परिसंघ र बैंकर्स संघले मूख्यतया निम्न कार्यहरुमा सहकार्य गर्ने छन् ।
  • -दुबै पक्षको क्षमता अभिवृद्धिका लागि संयुक्त रुपमा अध्ययन, अनुसन्धान तथा तालिम कार्यक्रमहरु आयोजना गर्ने ।
  • -वित्तिय तथा मौद्रिक नीति निर्माणका साथै सम्बन्धित ऐन नियमावलीको परिमार्जनमासाझा हितका विषयमा सरोकारवाहरुसँग सयुक्त रुपमा संवाद तथा छलफल गर्ने ।

Discussion Session on “Understanding the Social Security Fund: Opportunities and Challenges”

December 22, Kathmandu: Samriddhi Foundation hosted a public discussion session on “Understanding the Social Security Fund: Opportunities and Challenges” to address significant concerns and confusions regarding its operationalization and administration that have been raised recently.
The event held a moderated panel discussion wherein the Executive Director of NBA, Executive Director of Social Security Fund and Vice-President of CNI were among the panelists. The panel discussion was followed by Q&A with the audience where various Clauses incorporated in the SSF Procedure were discussed.

 

Round Table Discussion on Open Data for Business (OD4B)

December 19, 2019, Kathmandu: Nepal Bankers’ Association in partnership with World Bank organized a Round Table Discussion on “Open Data for Business (OD4B)” in the presence of Dr. Gunakar Bhatta, Executive Director – Research Department, Nepal Rastra Bank and senior executives from the member banks representing different departments.

The roundtable primarily focused on how banks in Nepal are using data in their decision making; existing barriers to acquire data and ways to leverage the data driven decision making practice for prudent financial system in Nepal.

Felicitation by NBA

December 5, 2019, Kathmandu: Nepal Bankers’ Association held its 33rd Annual General Meeting today. Giving continuation to NBA’s tradition of felicitating one eminent person during the AGM, who has significantly contributed towards the development and promotion of financial/banking sector, this year the Association decided to felicitate renowned and pioneer banker Mr. Prithvi Bahadur Pande, Chairman, Nepal Investment Bank Ltd.

Mr. Pande is the Chairman of Nepal Investment Bank. He has been contributing towards the development of banking industry over the last four decades and has played an active role in strengthening the financial sector of Nepal. He had held different positions in Nepal Rastra Bank and had worked as Director of Rastriya Banijya Bank Ltd. He also was the Founder, Executive Director, Chief Executive Officer of Himalayan Bank Ltd. before being the Chairman of Nepal Investment Bank Ltd.

During the AGM function, the Chief Guest of the program, Dr. Chiranjibi Nepal, Governer, Nepal Rastra Bank; Special Guest Chintamani Siwakoti, Deputy Governor, Nepal Rastra Bank, Mr. Gyanendra Pd. Dhungana, President of NBA and Mr. Bhuvan Kumar Dahal, newly elected President of NBA jointly presented Mr. Pande with a memento in recognition of his significant contribution in the banking and financial sector of Nepal.

Speaking after the felicitation, Mr. Pande shared some of his insights and experience, and thanked NBA for the recognition.
